The air filters in your AC will affect the efficiency of the performance of your AC. The MERV rating is used to indicate the effectiveness of these air filters in your AC.

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or MERV was introduced by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The standard introduced in 1987 is used to indicate the effectiveness of air filters. The values of MERV rating range from 1 to 20.

Usually the higher the MERV rating, the more effective the air filter is. That is the higher the MERV rating less dust and dirt particles can pass through it. Not just dust and dirt. Air filters usually filter pollen, pet dander, dust, dirt, fibers, bacteria and even tobacco smoke.

For residential purposes, air filters with MERV ratings from 8 to 13 will suffice. But in environments that require cleaner air, like hospitals and in operation theaters higher MERV ratings are needed. These settings usually use MERV ratings from 14 upwards to ensure the quality of air required is maintained.

The use of air filters with higher MERV ratings alone will not suffice. The air filters need to be replaced periodically as required. Depending on the type and MERV rating of the air filters, they need to be replaced more or less often. Usually, the time limit is two to three months to ensure the best efficiency of the air filters.

Bear this in mind. ACs are also machines that can break down with no prior warning. Even if you perform regular maintenance and checkups. While these preventative maintenances will reduce such occurrences, they cannot be eliminated. But there is no reason to sweat the next time your AC breaks down.
